چکیده

In mammalian species, olfactory cues are important for within and between species communication. These can be part of multimodal signals indicating, example, female fertility potentially perceived by male conspecifics. However, a large gap exists in our understanding signaling non-human catarrhines. Chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes ) live fission-fusion societies, mate promiscuously express high levels male-male competition. Females show striking visual signal, an exaggerated sexual swelling, known to proxy ovulation, while the maximum swelling is not matching exact time ovulation. The question remains if males use additional when being able approach females closely. This would allow pinpoint timing ovulation could one reason why high-ranking sire offspring more successfully than other males. Here, we present first systematic test such investigating sniffing behavior directed relation their group 13 captive chimpanzees. Our results that significantly increased with size, age as well fewer competitors were present. Hence, odors might cue, supporting idea monitor both gain comprehensive information on fertility.

Skin temperature and reproductive condition in wild female chimpanzees

Infrared thermal imaging has emerged as a valuable tool in veterinary medicine, in particular for evaluating reproductive processes. Here, we explored differences in skin temperature of twenty female chimpanzees in Budongo Forest, Uganda, four of which were pregnant during data collection. Based on previous literature in other mammals, we predicted increased skin temperature of maximally swolle...

Female competition in chimpanzees.

Female chimpanzees exhibit exceptionally slow rates of reproduction and raise their offspring without direct paternal care. Therefore, their reproductive success depends critically on long-term access to high-quality food resources over a long lifespan. Chimpanzee communities contain multiple adult males, multiple adult females and their offspring. Because males are philopatric and jointly defe...

Facial, olfactory, and vocal cues to female reproductive value.

Facial, olfactory, and vocal cues may advertise women's fertility. However, most of the evidence for this proposal has come from studies of changes in young adult women's attractiveness over the menstrual cycle. By contrast with this emphasis on changes in attractiveness over the menstrual cycle, possible changes in women's attractiveness over their lifespan have received little attention. The ...
